Hardwoods are not necessarily more durable than softwoods. Many perishable hardwood species include beech, ash and birch, while a prime example of naturally durable softwood is western red cedar, which is officially rated as having a 60 year service life as an exterior wall cladding material (no preservative treatment required).

The Timber Research and Development Association’s (TRADA) ‘In Touch with Timber 2010’ seminar was held in London on 18 May 2010. The one-day seminar was arranged to inspire construction industry professionals make the most of timber, both structurally and aesthetically, while providing an update on latest developments, ideas and innovations.

The event takes place annually, and this year's theme was 'Innovations in Timber', focussing on what has been and can be achieved with timber. The programme comprised of four inspirational seminars in the morning, including an insight into the design of the Woodwave roof structure used on the Richmond Oval Winter Olympic Stadium in Vancouver, provided by Paul Fast of Fast + Epp Engineers.

Alongside the seminar programme there was an exhibition showcasing timber-based products and services. Canada Wood UK was amongst eighteen organisations that supported the event, and arranged a stand from which partner association’s literature was distributed, samples shown, and technical advice provided.

The event was attended by approximately 150 architects, engineers, contractors, architectural technologists, surveyors, timber importers, and journalists.

TRADA is planning to launch a new UK show for the timber industry in June 2011, titled Timber Expo. The two-day event will comprise the highly informative In Touch With Timber conference and a supporting exhibition. TRADA aim to attract at least 100 exhibitors offering timber industry solutions and technogies. The location of the show has yet to be decided, but it is likely to be in the English Midlands region.

The National Homebuilding & Renovating Show took place at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham during period 19 - 22 March 2009. It attracts an audience of self-builders, home improvers, developers, architects and trades people, and aims to provide inspiration, information, and advice relevant to home building, improvement, renovation and maintenance.

The event has remained popular, and appeared not to have been seriously affected by the current economic downturn. Exhibitor figures were reduced slightly, down to 480 from 530 in 2008; and visitor figures fell to 32,000 from 36,000 recorded in 2008.

Exhibitors comprised national and regional suppliers promoting their products, innovations and latest services. Wood, and oak in particular was well represented, shown as hardwood floors, joinery, timber frame buildings and decks.

The Western Red Cedar Export Association participated with a stand manned by
Canada Wood UK staff. Cedar samples and posters were displayed, and WRCEA
information materials were distributed along with brochures belonging to WRCEA’s
UK-based Associate Members. Visitor interest in cedar was overwhelming.

Centaur Media plc organise and promote The National Homebuilding & Renovating Show, and have already arranged for the next edition to take place during period 18-21 March 2010.

The Ecobuild/Futurebuild trade fair took place at Earl's Court in London during period 3-5 March 2009. The show attracted more than 800 exhibitors and approximately 34,500 visitors - 33% more than in 2008. The subject matter addressed included: meeting the demand for green construction, challenges facing the construction industry in a period of economic downturn, building refurbishment, sustainable schools, carbon reduction and responsible sourcing, with an update on buildings regulations, codes and standards.

A Canadian Pavilion was arranged and co-ordinated by the High Commission of
Canada, accommodating Alouette Homes, BCWood Specialties Group, Canada Mortgage & Housing Corporation, Canada Wood Europe, Canadian High Commission, Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC), Forestry Innovation Investment Ltd, Fraserview Cedar Products Ltd, Ice Kube Systems Ltd, Icynene Europe, National Resources Canada - Canadian Forest Service, Quebec Wood Export Bureau (QWEB), Sperlich Log Construction Inc, Super E House Program and The Waldun Group.
