Hardwoods do not necessarily grow more slowly than softwoods. Rate of growth is a function of species in relation to the suitability of its growing medium, and hardwood species such as eucalyptus, ash and birch can grow very rapidly in locations to which they are suited, while some conifers growing in boreal habitats grow extremely slowly.
